Is Breakfast Free on Hilton Points Bookings? What Your Amex Points Actually Get You
Ever since I published my analysis on transferring Amex points to Hilton Honors, one question keeps landing in my DMs: “Is breakfast included when I book a Hilton hotel using points?”
It’s a fair question — and the answer matters more than most people realise, because it directly affects how you calculate the value of your points.
Let me answer it clearly, and then share something slightly contrarian about “complimentary breakfast” in general.

The Short Answer: No, Breakfast Is Not Included
Hilton points bookings do not include breakfast. When you redeem Hilton Honors points for a standard or premium room reward, you’re getting the room — not the meal.
But here’s what points bookings do cover, and it’s genuinely valuable:
- Taxes are included — unlike many hotel programmes, Hilton award bookings cover taxes and government charges, so there’s nothing extra to pay at checkout
- Fully refundable — points bookings can typically be cancelled up to one day before check-in with a full points refund, which is far more flexible than most discounted cash rates
That flexibility is underrated. A non-refundable Advance Purchase cash rate might look cheaper on paper, but it locks you in. A points booking gives you a near-free option to change your mind.
Why This Matters for My Value Comparison
In my Hilton vs Marriott analysis, I compared points bookings against cash rates. To keep that comparison honest, I deliberately used cash rates that were:
- “Without Breakfast” (room only) — matching what a points booking actually gives you
- Fully refundable — matching the cancellation policy of a points booking
So in both the cash rates and the points rates: breakfast is NOT included, and both are fully refundable. ✅
That makes it a genuine like-to-like comparison. 💯 Comparing a room-only points booking against a breakfast-inclusive cash rate would have inflated the apparent value of Hilton points — which is exactly the kind of shortcut that makes redemption maths look better than it really is.
Now the Contrarian Bit: “Complimentary Breakfast” Is Largely a Myth
Here’s something worth internalising if you book hotels regularly.
Most hotels offer “Room Only” rates that are meaningfully cheaper than their “Breakfast Included” rates. The difference isn’t goodwill — it’s simply the cost of breakfast, built into the higher rate.
Take a look at this real example from a Hilton property:

Comparing the two fully refundable rates for the same room and dates:
| Rate Type | Price per Night | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Honors Discount (Room Only) | ฿4,043 | Room, refundable |
| Breakfast Included | ฿5,181 | Room + breakfast, refundable |
| Difference | ฿1,138 (~22%) | The “free” breakfast |
The room-only rate is 22% lower than the breakfast-included rate. That ฿1,138 per night difference — roughly ₹2,700 for two adults — is the cost of the breakfast, quietly built into the so-called “complimentary” rate.
You’re not getting breakfast free. You’re pre-paying for it, at the hotel’s chosen price, whether or not you actually eat it. For a family that skips hotel breakfast to explore local cafés, that’s pure waste.
The Rule: Always Compare Like-to-Like
This is the practical takeaway. When you’re evaluating whether a points redemption is worth it, compare against a cash rate that matches on every dimension:
- Same room type
- Same dates
- Same cancellation policy — refundable vs refundable, not refundable vs non-refundable
- Same inclusions — room-only vs room-only, not room-only vs breakfast-inclusive
Skip any one of these and your points valuation is inflated. 📊 It’s the single most common mistake I see when people justify a points transfer.
So — Should You Transfer Amex Points to Hilton?
Now that the breakfast question is settled, the real question remains: does the Amex → Hilton transfer actually deliver useful value at the new 1000:1500 ratio?
I checked seven real Hilton properties across popular destinations — Sri Lanka, Abu Dhabi, Da Nang, Maldives, Bangkok, Goa and Bali — using strictly like-to-like cash comparisons. The values ranged from ₹0.44 to ₹1.52 per Amex point, and one popular destination came in well below my threshold.
