₹0.44 to ₹1.52 Per Point: What Your Amex Points Are Really Worth at Hilton vs Marriott

Marriott or Hilton — which is the better redemption option for your Amex Membership Rewards points? It’s the question I’ve been asked most since Amex improved its Hilton transfer ratio.

Amex recently increased the Amex → Hilton Honors transfer ratio from 1000:900 to 1000:1500 — a significant jump. Until then, Marriott Bonvoy was the default choice for most Indian Amex holders, thanks to its clean 100:100 transfer.

So has Hilton overtaken Marriott? I ran the numbers on seven real properties across popular destinations. The results ranged from a disappointing ₹0.44 to an outstanding ₹1.52 per point — and that spread tells you everything about how to approach this. Here’s what I found.

First, an Important Principle: Never Assign a Fixed Point Value

Both Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors are dynamic pricing programmes. The value of their points shifts by property and by date — the same hotel can be brilliant value one week and poor value the next.

This is unlike ALL Accor points, where a fixed value applies. So for Hilton and Marriott, I would never assign a fixed rupee value to a point and plan around it.

My approach instead:

  • Check both Marriott and Hilton properties in the destination I’m travelling to
  • Shortlist the hotels I’d genuinely want to stay at
  • Compare how many Amex points each would need for my actual dates
  • Transfer only after that comparison — never before

My thumb rule: any redemption giving me more than ₹0.50 value per Amex point is good enough to go ahead. 🎯

One more thing worth knowing: like Marriott, Hilton’s points bookings cover taxes too — so there’s nothing extra to pay at checkout on an award stay.

The Test: 7 Real Hilton Properties, Real Numbers

I randomly checked Amex point values on Hilton redemptions across popular destinations. Here’s what each Amex point actually saved in rupees:

Hilton PropertyPoints RequiredValue per Amex Point
🏨 Hilton Tārū Villas Bentota, Sri Lanka65,000 Hilton = 43,000 Amex₹1.52 🔥
🏨 Hilton Yas Island, Abu Dhabi70,000 Hilton = 46,667 Amex₹0.93 🔥
🏨 Hilton Garden Inn Da Nang, Vietnam15,000 Hilton = 10,000 Amex₹0.83
🏨 Hilton Maldives Amingiri314,000 Hilton = 210,000 Amex₹0.68
🏨 DoubleTree Sukhumvit, Bangkok30,000 Hilton = 20,000 Amex₹0.68
🏨 DoubleTree Baga, Goa24,000 Hilton = 16,000 Amex₹0.62
🏨 Hilton Garden Inn Nusa Dua, Bali67,000 Hilton = 45,000 Amex₹0.44

Six out of seven properties cleared the ₹0.50 threshold — and several comfortably exceeded it. That’s a strong result, and very much in line with what we’d expect from a good Marriott Bonvoy redemption. 💯

The Standout: Sri Lanka at ₹1.52 Per Point

Hilton Tārū Villas Bentota delivered ₹1.52 per Amex point — three times my minimum threshold. A $688.95 stay including breakfast for 43,000 Amex points is the kind of redemption that makes the transfer decision obvious.

Abu Dhabi: ₹0.93 Per Point, Plus Free Theme Park Access

Hilton Yas Island returned ₹0.93 per Amex point — and that’s before counting the free Yas Island theme park access included with the stay (one park per guest, per night). Factor that in and the real value goes considerably higher. 🎢

Da Nang: Strong Value at a Very Low Points Cost

Hilton Garden Inn Da Nang — just 15,000 Hilton points (10,000 Amex) for a stay worth ₹7,883, giving ₹0.83 per Amex point

At ₹0.83 per Amex point, Da Nang is excellent value — and at only 10,000 Amex points, it’s an easy redemption even with a modest points balance.

Maldives and Bangkok: Both at ₹0.68

Hilton Maldives Amingiri came in at ₹0.68 per point for a One Bedroom Overwater Pool Villa — a genuinely aspirational stay made accessible at 210,000 Amex points.

Bangkok matched it exactly at ₹0.68 — useful for a city break where you’d rather not spend cash on a hotel.

Goa: ₹0.62 for a Domestic Getaway

DoubleTree Baga returned ₹0.62 per point — comfortably above threshold, and a reminder that Hilton redemptions work for domestic trips too, not just international ones.

The One That Didn’t Work: Bali at ₹0.44

Bali’s Hilton Garden Inn Nusa Dua came in at ₹0.44 per point — below my threshold. It’s a useful reminder that not every Hilton property is a good deal, which is exactly why the check-before-you-transfer discipline matters.

A Word of Caution Before You Transfer

Don’t transfer Amex points blindly just because the redemption value looks good on paper. Always check:

  • The actual cash rate for the same room and dates
  • The points requirement for your specific travel dates, not a sample date
  • Whether it’s a hotel you genuinely want to stay at

Remember that Amex transfers are one-way and irreversible — points moved to Hilton or Marriott can’t come back. The best redemption is the one that gives good value and works for your travel plans. ✈️🏨

Building Your Amex Membership Rewards Balance

All of this only works if you have Membership Rewards points to transfer. And there’s a notable fact worth knowing here: the Amex Platinum Reserve Credit Card is currently the only American Express credit card being issued in India right now — and it happens to be available at excellent value on its joining benefits.

This is not an entry-level card — it sits firmly in the premium segment — but the current joining proposition makes it unusually compelling. Apply through a referral link and you get 15,000 Membership Rewards points as a joining benefit, along with:

  • 🏨 Accor Explorer Membership — auto-renews every year the card is active
  • 🌴 Taj Epicure Membership — also auto-renews annually
  • 🍽️ EazyDiner Prime Membership
  • ✈️ 12 domestic + 2 international airport lounge accesses — with no spend condition
  • 🌍 Complimentary Priority Pass membership
  • ⛳ Complimentary golf games every month (on ₹50,000 spend in the previous month)

All of this comes at a joining fee of ₹11,800 including GST — and with the new Hilton ratio, those 15,000 joining points alone convert to 22,500 Hilton Honors points, enough for a full night at properties like DoubleTree Baga with points to spare. 💯

So — Should You Transfer Amex Points to Hilton?

Absolutely yes — when the numbers make sense. At 1000:1500, a large number of Hilton hotels at popular global destinations are comfortably clearing ₹0.50 per Amex point. Hilton has gone from an afterthought to a serious contender.

Should I avoid transferring points to Marriott now?

No. If I’m getting a good Marriott property that gives good value for my Amex points on my travel dates, I’ll book Marriott without hesitation. The improved Hilton ratio doesn’t make Marriott worse — it simply gives you a second strong option.

To summarise

Both Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors are good redemption options now. On any given trip, I check which one is giving me the better overall deal and the better experience on my travel dates, and choose my redemption accordingly.

That, for me, is the right way to redeem Amex points.

Neither is universally better. Both are dynamic pricing programmes, so value varies by property and date. The improved Hilton ratio simply means you now have two strong options — always compare both for your specific dates before transferring.
As a thumb rule, anything above ₹0.50 per Amex point is a good enough deal. In my check of seven Hilton properties, six cleared this threshold, with one reaching ₹1.52 per point.
Yes. Like Marriott, Hilton award bookings made with points cover taxes, so there’s nothing extra to pay for the stay itself.
No. Transfers from Amex Membership Rewards to any hotel or airline partner are one-way and irreversible — which is why you should confirm your redemption before transferring.

  1. This is excellent. Thank you for generously sharing your knowledge. But for the war, the Yas Links option with theme park access is truly interesting. Any information on places in Japan or Mauritius?
